Story of Memphis: An Introduction

Who am I? I am…

A Memphian, born and raised. This is where I grew up. This is where I went to school. This is where I work.

A friend. I am compassionate, giving, concerned. I was taught to care about those around me. I was taught to be humble and to recognize that I have more than many others in my community. I was taught to be caring.

A person of faith. My customs, traditions and heritage were instilled in me by my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents.

Basically, I am a culmination of where I live, who I live there with, and the values that were taught to me. Each interaction I have had – with a family member, a friend, a teacher, or anyone else that has touched my life – has essentially shaped me into the person I am today. Each experience has altered the path of events that ultimately became my life as well as shaped the values that define my character as well as my personality.

When I think about Memphis and what makes it a unique place to live, I realize that much like myself, this city and what it is today has been shaped by those that live here (or have lived here), their interactions with the city, their values, and the ways in which they lived their lives. Just as those that have touched my life have altered my story, each person that comes through Memphis writes a small piece of the great story of Memphis.

Story of Memphis is a collection of these stories that make Memphis, well, Memphis! We are committed to sharing stories about our history, our culture, and our community.
